Fall 2013 Xmas Take-Home Exam

To all my classes:

Part of the assignment for this Christmas break will be the take-home exam.  I will be giving each student a Scantron form for the answer sheet, and you should use #2 pencil to fill out all the answers to the exam questions.

To conserve papers, I have prepared and upload the exam in .pdf file format.  You should try to download the .pdf file before Friday to see if you can read the file/questions.  If not, then you should come see me for a hard copy of the exam before you take-off for the break.

Help on Worksheet - Inferred Properties of Earth's Interior

Some of you inquired about how to work on the Worksheet - Inferred Properties of Earth's Interior...  Since I am explaining the steps, I thought I might as well post it here:

1.  Density of each inner layer is listed on the right hand side (top diagram).
2.  Depth range:  Follow the boundary of each layer all the way down to find what depth it corresponds to on the horizontal axis of the 2nd graph on the bottom.
3.  Pressure range:  Follow the boundary of each layer down to where it hit the solid bold curve on the 1st graph, then read off the pressure from the vertical axis (to the left).
4.  Composition:  On the top diagram, they listed composition for the crust and for the Inner and Outer Core.
5.  Temperature Range:  Follow the boundary of each layer down to where it hit the solid bold curve on the 2nd graph, then read off the temperature from the vertical axis (to the left).
6.  Final 3 columns:  If the Interior temperature for that layer is lower than the melting point (dashed curve), then the layer is unmelted and is a solid.  If it's above the melting point, then it's melted and is a liquid.  If it's above melting point in some region but below in other while still in the same layer, then it's partially melted and is considered "plastic".

• Unit 8 Review Sheet is distributed.  Originally I though we might have time on Thursday to go over it, but it looks like not to be the case.  So, complete the review sheet between today and tomorrow, and I will post the answer on my blog tomorrow night.  I will leave it up to you to decide what is going to be the best for you (whether you choose to do the review sheet, or not - and suffer the consequence on the exam).
